Over the course of speaking to thousands of people across the country for well over a decade, I’ve had my eyes opened to the reality of the human condition around success achievement.
Since my speaking revolves around the topic of business start-ups, professional success, personal development with a heavy emphasis on inspiration and motivation, my audiences are chalk-full of individuals seeking a change or a complete life-shift. The platform I speak to is a predominantly professional woman-based audience looking to reinvent not only themselves, but seeking admission on a path of restructuring their personal lives as well as their professional endeavors.
My observation and experience over ten plus years reveals a common-thread or phenomenon that none of us are immune to. I’m witness to a human flaw, a weakness in our awareness about how things are actually made manifest in our world. Many people possess an unconscious (or sometimes conscious) perception that they should be able to get an advanced degree, take a class, or attend a seminar, and experience an instant reversal in their life circumstances through some sort of accumulation or transfer of knowledge from teacher to student or speaker to participant.
A mindset that success will simply appear because we know how to be successful is a set-up for failure. We purchase fabulous tools, take classes, read books, rehash brilliant and inspiring quotes from great ones who’ve gone before us, but knowledge acquisition and actually practicing what we know are two different things.
Bottom-line: It’s a grave misperception to believe that somehow success will simply manifest itself from our intellect alone.
If success came this easy, everybody would be successful, but they’re not because success takes residence in those who take action.
The #1 Problem to achieving Success is followthrough.
Success does not and has never come through the acquisition of a degree. Success is not guaranteed by attending university, a seminar or earning a degree or certification. Success descends upon the ones who act with the knowledge gained from the education.
Read any good books lately? Study with any great teachers? Hear a great presentation? Moved by a quote that spoke to your heart? Now, the honest assessment. What have you DONE with the knowledge and insights you gained? Are you practicing what you’ve learned? Are you acting on that ‘Ah ha!’ moment?
True success is what you DO with what you have earned and learned. Action is the key word with respect to achievement. It takes action to step into your desired future. Our dreams will always remain mental fantasies unless we do something to move them forward out of the dream realm and into our physical reality.
We, like gardener and cultivator of our own existence, must actively graft our dreams onto our reality. This is the only means of creating the expression we desire into our daily physical experience.
How do we graft a dream onto our real life? We create this graft by doing something toward our goal every single day…put it into action in our present life circumstances. Making this graft is an action. An active shift that has the power to alter our current trajectory. If we don’t like the situation we’re in, we can’t change the situation by continuing to do what we’ve always done. It may be cliche but I do believe we all know this behavior to be insanity.
There is a time and a place for dreaming, but when dreams get caught and are not released into the reality of our experience they can become the seductive mental Kool-Aide we sip daily as we live into our heads procrastinating with elaborate schemes that distract us and keep us stuck in overwhelm and inertia. For example we may aspire to write a book but we never make any time to write. Instead, we become accustomed to, and are comfortable with day dreaming about being a writer “someday.” Our mind tells us there is not time to become an author today, but maybe someday when we have more time. In reality we could become an author today if we were to take action and make changes in our routine such as cutting out a few things that take us away from writing. Things like spending too much time on Google+, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, a favorite TV Show… you get the picture.
We procrastinate and sacrifice that which we desire most.
Too long indulging this kind of behavior produces an energetic hangover that can manifest itself as stagnation, frustration, dissatisfaction, depression, low energy, restlessness, and a feeling that we’re not living the life we know that we could be living. Beware of the tendency to become overly intoxicated by dreaming and rationalizing why your dreams must remain dreams and are not achievable today.
Our dreams left in the realm of dreaming can become a Siren’s song keeping us lost forever at sea, never reaching our desired destination.
NOW… this present moment (as you read this), is the perfect moment to extricate yourself from any self-imposed bondage.
Dreaming is a mind-thing, and the mind is a beautiful place to get lost.
Action is a body-thing and we do need the Mind-Body connection alive and functioning to take us where we really want to go. What do you want? Are you actively engaged? Are you taking some kind of action every day on what you want to see grafted onto your life experience?
Taking action is how we vote for our future. What will you cast?
