Have you ever pondered the mystery of how life takes us in directions we often never anticipate or expect? So it is with my experience living right now in one of the most exciting times in history. My dance with the convergence of Big Data, Cognitive Computing, Relationship Marketing and the Internet of Things (IoT) is nothing I could have imagined twenty five years ago isolating enzymes in a university lab looking for a cure to cancer. I think of how we used to collect, store, and access data and it blows my mind to think about how far we’ve come in such a short amount of time. Research capability alone has been upended through what’s possible with our current computing technology.
This week I am thrilled to be attending the DistribuTECH 2016 Conference and Exposition in Orlando, Florida. It’s actually the largest U.S. event covering utilities, (12,000 or so in attendance.) I will be sharing with you first-hand what is up-and-coming with the Internet of Things, (IoT), and new technologies from and for utilities. Think the grid, power, and IoT. Think massively H-O-T. Think about it for a moment…energy, utilities, IoT. What this translates into is enormous power. Imagine your life without utilities. What would you do without power? We take it for granted, don’t we? If we flick a light switch, it should come on. Imagine the potential in the future as you revision what the convergence of IoT and the power grid will mean. Will we even flick switches in the future?
Beyond the exposure to mind-blowing new technologies, I’m ever encouraged and hopeful when I attend these kinds of events and learn what is possible for our future and our children’s future. The only limits we know are the limits we self-inflict. We are both prisoner and jailer with the key. In unlocking our potential we must be future-forward considering all the possibilities, as well as, anticipated consequences in remaining where we are versus forging ahead into unknown territory. We are right now, creating the map. I’m an eternal optimist (and yet I do have a yearning to have a place entirely off-the-grid in case of the Zombie Apocalypse. Either that or I’m just looking for an excuse to own a Tesla model X.) Perhaps the Singularity is near, or I’m just obsessed with consuming Ray Kurzweil like a loved-starved teen pops Harlequin romance novels.
I would love to have you join me this week as I share with you not only from my blog, but from my social media channels on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and LinkedIn. This week I’d like to share from my eyes to yours what I am seeing at DistribuTECH this year, and what I’m learning about the future of industry. I value your input, insights, and comments. Always. We are, after all, in this together. #FutureMaker
(In the desire for full disclosure, I attended DistribuTECH on behalf of Verizon Enterprise, one of my clients.)
